Mahatma Gandhi Ji and Prem Ji Maharaj – What is common among them?

Two great leaders and servants, we celebrate your birthday today.  Both of them served their countrymen and mankind.  Swami Ji Maharaj influenced them both.  He gave Gandhi Ji a Mala and asked him to do Ram Naam practice in a disciplined way daily.  Prem Ji Maharaj was guided and groomed to serve all sadhaks in Shreeramsharnam, people at work, and others by giving homeopathic medicines for their ailments.

Let us celebrate it by following in their footsteps.  Starting today we can be more aware of our culture and heritage that includes Nishkam Seva, Nishkam Prarthana (Selfless service and prayer).

Mahatma Gandhi was instrumental in freedom of country while Prem Ji Maharaj following in the footsteps of Swami Ji Maharaj showed us how to free ourselves from the bondage of attachments and the attractions of the world with Seva and Simran.

We pray to Lord Shree Ram to give us one small quality of each one of these two Masters who really served the Great Master, The Lord of all by serving His children.

It is all yours Lord – Sab Tera Hai

If our belief becomes stronger and stronger that Lord or The Creator is all, all belongs to The Lord, and Lord is the sole doer, our life will become more peaceful, blissful, and filled with love.  Once we are filled with love it is like an ocean who cannot contain the waves, they go out and touch the beach, sand, people and everything on the beach.  Similarly this divine love cannot be contained within us it will go out and touch other lives.

What does that mean?

It means that our attitude, our bhavana, our feelings towards our self and others have totally been transformed – we will be accepting people unconditionally because we see Ram in all.  We will be not serving people we will be serving Ram.  We will not argue, fight, or say bad things about anybody.  We will be able to forgive others readily and easily.

So dear sadhaks, let us surrender our self and everything we think we think is ours at the holy feet of the Lord Shree Ram and see the Lord working through us, having bhakti done through us, and doing selfless service through us, we being an instrument of the Lord,

Selfless Service – True Giving

I noticed a common message in a story in Shree Swami Satyanand Ji Maharaj’s Bhakti Prakash and in his Ramayan-Saar that is inspired by Valmiki Ramayan. Both delivered a common message about serving and true giving.

In Bhakti Prakash there is a story of a king who having lost everything to a neighboring king’s invasion, was hiding his face wherever he could. He was disappointed in himself for not been able to protect his subjects from unruly invaders. A very rich businessman met with the king and offered all his wealth and the services of his seven sons to help the king get his kingdom back.

After getting the kingdom back the king was planning a huge celebration in which he was going to honor the businessman who gave his all. Before the celebration started, the businessman approached the king and asked him not to do that because he did that only due to his duty to his country. The businessman further said, “In my heart I am so overfilled with joy that there is no room for my praise”.

This is true giving – giving without any expectation of name or fame. Pujya Dr. Viswa Mitter JI Maharaj says we should serve and do our duty with no expectation of even receiving a “thank you” and he reminds us, that is how, Shree Prem Ji Maharaj lived his life, with nishkam bhav or selfless service without desiring any personal gain.

In Ramayan-Saar there is a mention of people of Ayodhaya who served while remaining humble. They were skillful, adept in dispensing their duties, smart, and Ram Bhakt. Out of their love for Lord Ram they were serving others.

Let us also do Ram Ka Kaam in the same spirit.

We are blessed to have such great Pujya Gurujans who have blessed us with Ram Naam and given us so many gifts such as Amritvani, and translations of Ramayan, Bhagvad Gita, Upnishads, and many more valuable booklets, audio and video discourses, bhajans, etc.
