Selfless Service – True Giving

I noticed a common message in a story in Shree Swami Satyanand Ji Maharaj’s Bhakti Prakash and in his Ramayan-Saar that is inspired by Valmiki Ramayan. Both delivered a common message about serving and true giving.

In Bhakti Prakash there is a story of a king who having lost everything to a neighboring king’s invasion, was hiding his face wherever he could. He was disappointed in himself for not been able to protect his subjects from unruly invaders. A very rich businessman met with the king and offered all his wealth and the services of his seven sons to help the king get his kingdom back.

After getting the kingdom back the king was planning a huge celebration in which he was going to honor the businessman who gave his all. Before the celebration started, the businessman approached the king and asked him not to do that because he did that only due to his duty to his country. The businessman further said, “In my heart I am so overfilled with joy that there is no room for my praise”.

This is true giving – giving without any expectation of name or fame. Pujya Dr. Viswa Mitter JI Maharaj says we should serve and do our duty with no expectation of even receiving a “thank you” and he reminds us, that is how, Shree Prem Ji Maharaj lived his life, with nishkam bhav or selfless service without desiring any personal gain.

In Ramayan-Saar there is a mention of people of Ayodhaya who served while remaining humble. They were skillful, adept in dispensing their duties, smart, and Ram Bhakt. Out of their love for Lord Ram they were serving others.

Let us also do Ram Ka Kaam in the same spirit.

We are blessed to have such great Pujya Gurujans who have blessed us with Ram Naam and given us so many gifts such as Amritvani, and translations of Ramayan, Bhagvad Gita, Upnishads, and many more valuable booklets, audio and video discourses, bhajans, etc.
